2007 List of Favorites from The Seattle Traveler

When we’re young it seems that time passes ever so slowly, but as adults it seems that we’ve barely turned around and another year has passed.

As we watch the dwindling hours of the year, here’s the list of my personal favorites from this past year. Some are making repeat appearances, and some are new.

Favorite special occasion restaurant: Canlis. A Seattle institution, it was off my list for awhile, but now reappears.

Favorite casual restaurant: Tuttabella for Pizza.

Favorite fast food restaurant: Dick’s Drive-In. Nothing beats their burgers.

Favorite steakhouse: El Gaucho, Belltown. Their tableside presentation is still the best around. I’d prefer to skip all the new and “hip” restaurants in favor of this classic restaurant with a 40’s feel.

Favorite seafood restaurant: The Oceanaire, downtown.

Favorite ethnic restaurant: Assaggio’s, Belltown, for Italian. Chef Mauro has a big welcome for everyone.

Favorite view restaurant: Salty’s Alki, which looks back at the city. Although, in my opinion, the food has never lived up to the level of the view.

Favorite out of town restaurant: Salish Lodge, Snoqualmie

Favorite Hotel: Grand Hyatt, downtown. There were another couple in the running for awhile, but the Grand Hyatt consistently delivers.

Favorite Museum: Henry Art Gallery on the UW campus

Favorite thing to do in Seattle on a sunny day: Hang out at the Pike Place Market. It’s still one of the best ways to spend an afternoon.

Favorite thing to do in Seattle on a rainy day: Hang out at the library.

Favorite drink after work bar: Vessel, downtown. Also good before a performance at the Fifth Avenue Theater.

Favorite nightspot: Jazz Alley. Still. There are very few places I’d rather go to see live music in a nightclub environment, and none of them are in Seattle.

Favorite music venue: Benaroya Hall plays host to a variety of musical events.

Favorite touristy thing to do: Strolling along Alki Beach.

Favorite day trip from Seattle: Peace Arch Park, Blaine

Favorite weekend trip from Seattle: Astoria, Oregon

Favorite blog post: From back in May, Chicks in the City.
