“Captured Youth” at Pioneer Square’s James Harris Gallery

Steve Harris: Captured YouthWhile wandering around the Pioneer Square area the other day, I cam across a disturbing, yet thought provoking, photography exhibit at the James Harris Gallery.

“Captured Youth” is a series of photographs of teens incarcerated in various Washington state correctional facilities.  In these portraits, photographer Steve Davis captures both the starkness of their lives and the buildings in which they spend their lives.  It’s a mix of arrogance and pain, pride and sorrow, lots of anger, and, the observer would hope, of regret.

I’m not entirely sure what emotions this exhibit evoked – probably just a sense of helplessness.  Helplessness at our inability to understand a social system in which our children live lives so barren, whether incarcerated or not.

Location:  309A 3rd Avenue South (Pioneer Square)

Hours:  Wednesday – Saturday 11 am – 5 pm.  Tuesdays by appointment.  “Captured Youth” will be on display through March 17th.

Steve Davis is the Coordinator of Photography and a faculty member of The Evergreen State College in Olympia.
