Dirty Dancing: 20th Anniversary Screening

Dirty Dancing: 20th Anniversary Screening

Some movies stand the test of time, and Dirty Dancing appears to be one of them. Twenty years after its release, this coming of age movie, is celebrating with an anniversary party, which includes an opportunity to once again see Johnny and Baby on the big screen.
With stars Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, as Johnny and Baby, Dirty Dancing explores the end of teenage innocence in a rapidly changing world. Set in the 60’s, at a summer camp in the Catskills, naive and sheltered Baby learns about life outside her own wealthy family, and ultimately has to choose the values …read more

Photo Op: Pioneer Square Pergola

Photo Op: Pioneer Square Pergola

Details: The Pergola in Pioneer Square Park (at the triangular corner of Yesler Way and First Avenue) was originally constructed in 1909 as a shelter for passengers waiting for the cable car that ran along Yesler Way. It was built in a Victorian style, out of iron and glass, and was about 60 feet long and 16 feet high. It was restored in 1972, and designated a historic landmark in 1977. In January 2001, the Pergola was demolished by a truck that cut the corner a little too close and crashed into the building. The Pergola was carefully reconstructed, and …read more

Taking the City by Storm

There’s a storm a brewin’ — and this is one that you’re not going to want to miss.
The Seattle Storm, of the WNBA, launch their 2007 season, with two pre-season road games (Indiana on May 5th and Connecticut on May 8th), and then a home pre-season game against Sacramento on May 11th. The regular season begins with a game against Sacramento at home on Saturday, May 11th at 7 pm.

Discover Your Inner Chef with Cooking Classes at Dish it Up

While I know my way around a kitchen, I’m very much in awe (and appreciation!) of my friends who push the boundaries of gourmet cooking.  In awe — probably because I wish I was as competent in the kitchen; in appreciation — because I sometimes get to reap their generosity by being asked to share a meal.  There’s just not much that is better than that.
But, one cannot always trade on the bonds of friendship for a good meal, so I went looking for way to improve my culinary skills and have fun, at the same time.
Enter Dish it Up, …read more

Washington State Apple Blossom Festival in Wenatchee

Washington State Apple Blossom Festival in Wenatchee

This weekend launches one of the oldest festivals in our state — The Washington State Apple Blossom Festival, in Wenatchee.
The festival started in 1919 as a one-event that involved speeches, baseball, some singing and a Maypole. It was successful at drawing business and community leaders from around the state, so it was turned into an annual event. In 1921 a parade was added to the events, and the festival took off from there. It has grown in leaps and bounds, and has expanded to more accurately reflect the important of the apple industry not only to the Wenatchee area, but …read more

Art & More at Seattle’s Wing Luke Asian Museum

Art & More at Seattle’s Wing Luke Asian Museum

In the heart of Seattle’s Chinatown, or as it now more correctly known — the International District, is the Wing Luke Asian Museum. It is the first affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution in the Pacific Northwest, and it collects and preserves artifacts, photographs, archives and oral histories pertaining to the history, culture and art of the Asian Pacific American community. It is the only pan-Asian Pacific American museum in the country.
It was a warm, sunny weekend in Seattle, providing near perfect conditions for walking around the International District. As the sun passed behind some clouds, I popped into the Wing …read more

Green Hotel Options in Seattle

Green Hotel Options in Seattle

Since Earth Day is tomorrow, and there’s been lots of focus on green businesses, green services, and eco-topics in general, I thought I’d pass on information about a couple of dowtown Seattle hotels that are trying to do their part to protect our planet.
Kimpton Hotels, in an effort to provide guests with a quality product, while still being a good steward of the earth, has developed an EarthCare standard for their properties. This includes day-to-day things like using recycled paper with a soy-based ink for everything they print (brochures, menus, business cards, etc.), using environmentally friendly cleaning products, and …read more

Buy Books & More at the Friends of the Seattle Public Library Sale

Buy Books & More at the Friends of the Seattle Public Library Sale

This past week has been National Library Month, and as a big fan and user of my public library, I feel remiss at not mentioning it before now.
However, I found one last chance — with the Friends of the Seattle Public Library Book Sale.
A couple hundred thousand items will be on sale at this semiannual sale, including artwork, audio cassettes, books, CDs, software, records (remember those?), sheet music, Viceocassettes and DVDs.
If the “rules” of the sale are any indication, past sales must have become a little too raucous. I wasn’t expecting to see “be courteous” having to be explained to …read more
