UPDATE: Additions to Seattle Festival & Fairs for June

UPDATE: Additions to Seattle Festival & Fairs for June

Just wanted to update my previous list of Seattle area Festivals and Fairs that are happening in June. Here are some additions:
June 2-3: Georgetown Music Fest. Music, music, music.
June 9-10: Pagdiriwang at the Seattle Center. A celebration of Philippine film, dance, drama, fashion and food. I’m told that this is a traditional festival, but I’m going to check with my friends at Filipina Soul to find out.
I’ll update this list with more festival and fair information when I come across it.

Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars to Perform at Triple Door

Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars to Perform at Triple Door

What does Freedom sound like?
To the members of Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars, it sounds like a combination of traditional West African music with a bit of reggae influence.
The members of the world music act all lived in or near Freeport (the capital city of Sierra Leone) before fleeing during the country’s civil war. Although Freetown had remained relatively sheltered from the rebellion, in the late 1990’s in turned into a bloody battlefield. Thousands of people fled the city. In Kalia Refugee Camp in Guinea, two of those refugees met up, and out of that meeting created a band that …read more

Carnival of Cities: A Street Party

Carnival of Cities: A Street Party

It’s Monday, and even though it’s a holiday here in the U. S., we still have another edition of the Carnival of Cities. This week’s edition, A Street Party, is hosted by Eric at Walkable Neighborhoods.
My contribution to this week’s carnival was Bugs for the Wall at Howard House.
I’m a regular contributor to this weekly Carnival, and always find some great writing offered up by the other participants. I recommend that you head on over to read the full list of articles.
I am, however, going to start mentioning my favorite every week. That’s a tough, tough decision, because there’s always …read more

I Want to Ride My Bicycle

I Want to Ride My Bicycle

I hadn’t ridden a bike in a number of years, and I found myself wanting to get back into the habit. The weather has been nice around here lately, and I wanted some outdoor activity besides just walking.
I did a little preliminary research into what I wanted in a bike, and eventually made my decision. The purchase didn’t stop with just the bike, though, as I also need a helmet and lock. Then there was the whole process of getting the bike home, requiring the purchase of a bike rack (and learning how to use it).
Finally, I made it. Everything …read more

Bugs for the Wall at Howard House

Bugs for the Wall at Howard House

Insects can be kind of creepy. Especially when you see the crawling around your wall. While I’m not afraid of them, it does send a sort of shiver up my spine and I “relocate” them.
It was with a little trepidation, then, that I approached the current exhibit at Howard House, an exhibit by local artist Jim Rittimann, Paradise Insects/Symbiotic Relationships. It was insects. Lots of them. Hanging on the wall. But these insects were a little more intriguing than creepy.
Rittiman relies on animal bones, plant seeds, and other organic matter to create skeletal sculptures of insects. Looking at them almost …read more
