Bugs for the Wall at Howard House
Insects can be kind of creepy. Especially when you see the crawling around your wall. While I’m not afraid of them, it does send a sort of shiver up my spine and I “relocate” them.
It was with a little trepidation, then, that I approached the current exhibit at Howard House, an exhibit by local artist Jim Rittimann, Paradise Insects/Symbiotic Relationships. It was insects. Lots of them. Hanging on the wall. But these insects were a little more intriguing than creepy.
Rittiman relies on animal bones, plant seeds, and other organic matter to create skeletal sculptures of insects. Looking at them almost made me feel like I was looking at a scientific display, but Rittiman gives his creatures striking poses and expressions. It’s a combination of science and art, and on more than one occasion I found myself wondering, “are they real?”
Location: Howard House, 604 Second Avenue (Pioneer Square, one block north of the Smith Tower)
Dates & Times: May 3rd – June 16th, Tuesday – Saturday, 10:30 am – 5 pm.
Admission: Free
The exhibit includes over 40 framed works, and can be viewed in under an hour. Just think — here you can actually buy bugs to put on your wall!

That sounds like a good exhibit, Mary Jo. I’ll bet the kids love it especially. When San Diego’s Natural History Museum had their “Backyard Monsters” exhibit, my son would beg to go to the “Bug Museum” to see huge room-sized moving models upstairs, and all of the live creepy-crawlies downstairs. Even those of us who are less enamored of bugs were fascinated.
Yes Carole, there is something oddly alluring about the creepy crawlies of the world!
