Smokey Joe’s Cafe at Jazz Alley
The musical review, Smokey Joe’s Cafe, returns to the city that gave it a start, with performances at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley June 12-17th.
Smokey Joe’s got it start in 1990 at Seattle’s now defunct Empty Space Theater, as an intimate cabaret show. After spending time at Empty Space, the revue went on to have great success on Broadway, opening on March 2nd, 1995. It lost its small feel, becoming a much larger production, and along the way received seven Tony nominations. It won a Grammy for “Best Musical Show Album” in 1995. Since then, the revue has been seen world-wide, including a two year run in London, and three major national tours.
The appeal of Smokey Joe’s is its classic music — a compilation of pop and rhythm & blues hits written by Jerry Leiber (lyrics) and Mike Stoller (music). The duo began their songwriting career as teens, getting a big break from blues artist Big Mama Thornton. There was no looking back — until Smokey Joe’s — and looking back is exactly what the revue does. Featuring 40 classic tunes, including such diverse hits as Stand by Me, Love Potion #9, and Spanish Harlem, the show is sure to have you tapping your toe in time.
The Jazz Alley production features the Pacific Jazz Institute and revives the show’s original cabaret atmosphere.
