There’s Art on the Eve of Motel Destruction

I’m not sure if these motels were rent-by-the-hour establishments, or just places that are well past their prime, but there’s a slew of motels set for destruction around the city, making way for new and beautiful things.

To mourn the passing of the venerable institutions (or celebrate progress — it all depends on your point of view), you can take one last trip down memory lane with Motel, a performance art based group conducting one last hurrah before the walls come tumbling down.

The current performance can be seen at the Ambassador Motel through Friday, September 28th.

What’s to see?

These are endurance performances set in one of the rooms of the motel.  Each of the artists has committed to an 8-hour stretch, with performances running round the clock, 24/7.  Onlookers will view the performances by looking through the windows in a voyeuristic manner.  The performances can also be viewed via live video streaming — ’cause not everyone is going to be able to get out to the motels!  Performances will also be posted on You Tube.

Location:  Ambassador Motel, 12059 Aurora Avenue North (map it)

Date & Times:  September 22nd – 28th, 2007, 24/7

Admission:  FREE

This motel is still in business — at least for a few days more — so attendees are asked to be courteous toward other guests.

The Ambassador Motel schedule of events can be found here.  Additional performances will be set in motels as they are set for destruction, with details on the Motel website.

It’s a little quirky, and certainly not for everyone, but it IS creative.  Take a look at what I’m talking about in this video:
