A Family Friendly XXX Stop
There are only a few times when the label XXX is family friendly – but one of those times is at the XXX Rootbeer Drive-In in Issaquah.
This place will take you back to the golden era of drive-ins. I think of it as our little slice of “American Graffiti.”
The burgers are big, covering the entire bun, and messy. The foot log dogs are really a foot long. The milk shakes are hand made, with real ice cream and milk. The onions rings are crunchy and sweet and the chili dog goopy and flavorful. And then there’s the rootbeer — frothy and bitingly sweet, served in a chilled mug — or even better, the rootbeer floats.
Decor is 1950’s too car memorabilia, and the menu items creatively named as well. While my favorite is a burger, other menu items include: Flat Tire (The Best Chicken Strips & Fries, $7.45), Smitty Muffler (XXX Homemade polish sausage Corn Dog, $4.25), and the Low Rider (Burger, bacon, grilled onions, mayo, XXX dressing & fries, $7.45). There is a Matchbook Menu for the kids.
XXX has long been a stopping off for skiiers and travelers over the pass, along with car enthusiasts there for the Saturday (weather permitting) “Cruz-In.”
While your arteries will probably not welcome a steady diet of XXX, this short drive from Seattle is a fun, and yummy, occasionally treat. And if it helps, think of it as a historical outing, as this is the last XXX historical XXX Rootbeer Drive-In the country.
