Samuel Green, Washington State Poet Laureate

Did you know that Washington State has a Poet Laureate?

The position was established in 2007 as a mean to build awareness and appreciation of poetry across the state through public appearances and readings, presentations in the schools, and offering workshops and lectures for the general public.  On on December 17th, 2007 Governor Christine Gregoire appointed Samuel Green to a two year term as the State Poet Laureate.

Samuel Green is a native of Washington, currently living on Waldron Island in the San Juans.  He is the author of ten poetry collections, the most recent of which is Grace of Necessity, published this year.  He is also the editor of a small press focusing on publishing works of Washington poets.

Sam Green is going to give a reading at the library in Gig Harbor on the evening of May 1, 2008 – they are flying him off the island (Waldron) and driving him down for the event; if you are a poetry fan you should come. Not sure what time it is, 6 or 7pm; Pierce Country Library on Pt. Fosdick Drive
