This Weekend. . . Play some Games All Weekend Long

This weekend. . .
. . . there ARE things going on other than Bumbershoot.  Oh sure, Bumbershoot is a lot of fun, but if you’re worried about the weather, want to around a few thousand less people, or are tired of the same old Labor Day Weekend experience, check out the Penny Arcade Expo.

Bright Blooms at Seymour Botanical Conservatory in Tacoma’s Wright Park

Beautiful blooms await you year round at the W.W. Seymour Botanical Conservatory in Tacoma’s Wright Park.
The 1908 Victorian building is home to over 700 mature trees, representing about 100 native and exotic species, and also has more than 550 plant species in its permanent collection.  It also houses a year round rotating exhibit of floral displays, which generally means between 300-500 blooming plants at any one time.
Guided tours are available that will explain the plant collections and a little history of the Conservatory and Wright Park.  Self-guided tour books are also available if you’d prefer exploring on …read more

The Flying Heritage Collection Takes to the Skies

The Flying Heritage Collection Takes to the Skies

Look!  Up in the air!  It’s a P-51 Mustang and a Hawker Hurricane!
These vintage aircraft are just two of Paul Allen’s Flying Heritage Collection, which also includes 15 restored fighter planes from the United States, Great Britain, Germany, Japan, and the Soviet Union.  The collection also features a Curtiss P-40 Tomahawk (in photo), believed to be the only one in the world currently in flying condition.
In other words, for airplane fans – this is some seriously cool stuff – and well worth the drive north to Everett.
On alternate Saturdays through mid-October, these vintage aircraft will take to the …read more

View Roman Photographs at the Henry Art Gallery

View Roman Photographs at the Henry Art Gallery

After my trip to Italy earlier this year, I’ve kept an eye open for any events, exhibits, or news of the country that I fell in love with.  Earlier this spring, the Seattle Art Museum hosted a traveling exhibit of Roman Art from the Louvre.
Now, it’s the Henry’s turn with Roman Holiday, a series of 19th and 20th century images of famous Roman spots, including the Forum, St Peter’s, and the Castel Sant’Angelo.  I had the opportunity to see many of these historic sites while I was in Rome, so am curious about these earlier photographs.
The exhibition runs …read more

Celebrate Labor Day with Women in Agriculture

Celebrate Labor Day with Women in Agriculture

Combine a Labor Day Weekend getaway with a little Labor history with a trip to Portland to see the "Women in Agriculture" at the Oregon Historical Society Museum.
This exhibit of dramatic and poignant black-and-white photographs gives voice to the often overlooked American farm woman and her relationship to the land.
Too diverse to uniformly categorize, these women were more than just a farmer’s wife.  They wrestled with issues of work, poverty, family, running a household, and community.  They shaped the farm in ways that shaped the future of the country with their focus on sustainable agriculture, bio-diversity and entrepreneurship.
These …read more

This Weekend. . . Discover the Roof of the World at Tibet Fest

This Weekend. . . Discover the Roof of the World at Tibet Fest

At an average of 10,000 feet above sea level, Tibet is often called the “roof of the world,” although all that many of us know about the country is the political conflict between it and China, and the Potala Palace, traditional home to the Dalai Lama.
There’s lots more rich history and culture to be discovered about Tibet, and much of it will be on display at this weekend’s Tibet Fest.
The purpose of Tibet Fest is to preserve many of the centuries old traditions of the Tibetan people, and to celebrate both the ancient and modern history of the country …read more
