6 Suggestions for a Day in Pioneer Square

by Mary Jo on June 27th, 2008

Occidental Park in Pioneer Square On a typical day, Pioneer Square is full of business people going a hundred different directions, shoppers, tourists, and, since I believe in honesty here — a few men and women who call the park benches there home.

This is a great area to explore, whether you are a visitor or resident, as the area is full of shops, galleries, restaurants and cafes, and plenty of places to just sit and relax for a bit.

Here are a six suggestions to get you started:

  1. Pergola:  Located at the at the triangular corner of Yesler Way and First Avenue, the Pergola is an easily located meeting place.
  2. Smith Tower:  Located at 502 Second Avenue (between James and Yesler), the building has interesting architecture, and offers great views from the observation deck.
  3. Seattle Underground:  If you’ve seen Seattle from above, consider a look from below.  Tours depart from 608 First Avenue.
  4. Police Museum:  Honoring the men, women, and dogs who protect and serve.  Located at 317 Third Avenue South.
  5. Waterfall Garden:  This urban park, located at 219 Second Avenue South (Main & Second), provides Zen-like peace in an otherwise heavy traffic area.  Power outlets are available for those who can’t leave work behind.
  6. Occidental Park (in photo above):  Sure it’s mostly cement paths, but there are benches where you can sit and rest, ADA compliant restrooms, some nice flowers and trees, and wi-fi.  Located at Occidental Avenue South & South Main Street, the park is open 6 am - 11:30 pm.
