At Seattle Children’s Theater - Addy: An American Girl Story

by Mary Jo on April 10th, 2007

If you have a daughter, you’re probably well versed in the existence, background and nuance of the American Girls dolls, books, and background. I’ve seen the dolls, and have only recently begun to understand that they generate a nearly cult-like frenzy with the younger set. There is, however, behind the dolls, an attempt to inject a little leaning into play time.

AddyOne of the American Girl historical dolls is named Addy. Addy is a nine year old runaway slave, who flees her North Carolina plantation and begins a new life in Philadelphia.

The story of Addy’s life and adventures has been brought to life at the Seattle Children’s Theater in Addy: An American Girl Story . The play tells the story of Addy and her mother’s flight from North Carolina to Philadelphia after her father and brother has been sold to another plantation owner. It’s a harrowing journey, and the pair run into danger and difficulty along the way. After arriving in Philadelphia, Addy gets to attend school for the first time, and she learns to read and write. Life isn’t all a bed of roses, however, as Addy faces the hurts and snubs of friendship, and clings to her dream of having her family back together again.

The Seattle production, based on the Addy books by Connie Porter, was written by Cheryl L. West, and is directed by Linda Hartzell.
