Bring a Child to The Children’s Museum, Seattle

by Mary Jo on December 28th, 2006

There are very few places where adults must be accompanied by a child, but The Children’s Museum, Seattle is one of my favorites.

Childrens Museum SeattleLocated on the first level of the Center House at the Seattle Center, the museum is a 32,000 square foot environment just for children through 10 years of age and their families.  The exhibits are all interactive, encouraging touching, and playing, and learning, and are capable of withstanding some pretty vigorous activities.

Most of all, though, the exhibits are designed to stimulate a child’s mind by allowing them to role play, problem solve, and develop eye-hand coordination.  It reminds me of playing the way I did when I was a kid.  You just let your imagine run wild and do it.

The Museum has 11 permanent exhibits, an art studio, two classrooms, a gallery for traveling and temporary exhibits, a story telling circle, and a resource library, and offers workshops, camps, and weekend programming.

The permanent exhibits are:  Bijou Theater, Cog City, Discovery Bay, Global Village, Imagination Studio, MindScape, Mountain Forest, and Neighborhood.  You can check them out on the Museum’s map.

Location:  The Children’s Museum, Seattle is located at 305 Harrison, in the Center House on the Seattle Center campus.  Parking is available in nearby pay lots.  Rates vary.

Hours:  Monday-Friday, 10 am-5 pm.  Saturday and Sunday, 10 am-6 pm.  Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Day.

Admission:  $7.50 Adults and Children; $6.50 Grandparents, $6 for groups of ten or more.  Children under the age of one are free.

Currently the Museum is offering, “Adventures with Clifford the Big Red Dog.”   Drawing on the characters and themes from the television show, the exhibit focuses on the importance of community and being a good citizen.  There’s even a nine-foot Clifford with a giant tale to use as a slide, just like Emily Elizabeth does on the television show.  The Clifford exhibit runs through January 7th.

The exhibit also emphasizes Clifford’s Big Ideas:

  • Share
  • Play Fair
  • Have Respect
  • Work Together
  • Be Responsible
  • Be Truthful
  • Be Kind
  • Believe in Yourself
  • Be a Good Friend
  • Help Others

Pretty good concepts for adults to get a handle on as well!
