Banned Books & Booze in a Tempest

I’ll have a cocktail with my book discussion, thank you very much.
That’s the idea behind two monthly literary nights at Tacoma’s Tempest Lounge, coordinated with the local King’s Books.
On the first Tuesday of the month is the Book Slut Social.  There’s no requirement to read any particular book for this book social.  It’s about […]

2007 List of Favorites from The Seattle Traveler

When we’re young it seems that time passes ever so slowly, but as adults it seems that we’ve barely turned around and another year has passed.
As we watch the dwindling hours of the year, here’s the list of my personal favorites from this past year.  Some are making repeat appearances, and some are […]

If You’ve Been Drinking, Let Anna Take You Home

Drinking and New Year’s Eve just see to go hand in hand, but that doesn’t mean you should get behind the wheel of a car!
There are several options –  get a hotel room and walk to your events (that’s what I’m doing), select a reliable designated driver, book a limo for the evening, or […]

Spend the Holidays with Dina Martina

For some, the holidays means sugar plum fairies, the pungent smell of a tree, hot cocoa, old-fashioned ornaments, and sharing presents and making memories with friends.
For others, it’s about drag queens, trashy costumes, butchered carols, and bizarre comedy.  If you’re a fan of the latter holiday festivities, you probably already have your tickets to […]

Crocodile Cafe Closed!

It’s not a rumor!
The Crocodile Cafe, a night life institution that climbed to fame during the Seattle grunge era, closed suddenly yesterday.  While there had been rumors of financial struggles, the closing took many by surprise.
Hold on to those memories!

Musicals for the 2007-08 5th Avenue Theater schedule

I’ve written about several of the theater offerings around the Seattle area, and looking through the flyer for the 5th Avenue Theater’s 2007-08 season, it looks like another great season of theater is ahead of us.
Take a look at this line up:
Lone Star Love (runs through September 30th).  A riff on Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives […]

Dave Matthews Band in Concert Labor Day Weekend

The weather forecast for the Labor Day Weekend is looking a little sketchy.  Those of us who live here are used to it, but if you’re planning to visit, you may want to re-think staying in the city.  Instead, consider heading off to George, Washington and The Gorge Amphitheatre.
Dave Matthews Band will perform three outdoor […]

Labor Day Weekend & Bumbershoot

Billed as the “mother of all arts festivals,” Bumbershoot was one of the good things to come out of Seattle in the 1970’s, an otherwise turbulent and uninspired time in our city’s history.  37 years after its birth, the festival is bigger and better than ever.
In 1970, then Mayor, Wes Uhlman, formed a citizen’s group […]

Tango the Weekend Away at Tango Magic 2007

Do you remember that scene in the movie Scent of a Woman where Al Pacino was teaching Gabrielle Anwar how to Tango?  I always thought that was one of the sexiest movie scenes — the music, the rhythm, the dance.
If the Tango speaks to you in similar ways, you can learn some moves over the […]
