Climbing to the Top at REI
REI is not just a long time Seattle store, it’s a destination in and of itself. In fact, it ranks as one of Seattle’s top sightseeing attractions.
REI Seattle has become known for its rock climbing wall, a 65 foot tall, realistic, four-story rock sculpture, with routes ranging from 5.4 to 5.11. Gear and belay is provided by the store staff.
I’ve spent some time at the rock wall. I wasn’t climbing; I was standing there looking up at the people who were. That’s one mighty tall wall!
REI offers climbing classes for all ages and abilities. The kids climbing class has a minimum age of only eight! If an eight year old can climb the wall, I’m sure the rest of us can give it a go as well.
If you’re not convinced to make a climb, REI is still a good stop for shopping. You’ll find TONS of gear and equipment, and a knowledgeable staff can help you make the selection that is right for your skill level.
Whether it’s a one-time stop in, or you become a REI regular, this is one of the quintessential Seattle stores.

Hi, Mary Jo.
I am a HUGE fan of REI, and climbed the wall at the Minneapolis store (the largest apart from yours in Seattle, if I remember right.) They have great quality gear, and the store is actually a co-operative. If you’re a member, you receive dividends at the end of the year based on how much you purchased! I just wish they had some stores here in the UK…

REI is a GREAT shopping place, Jed, I agree with you. Even though I am only a casual “outdoors gal” I always find lots there that I can use.
