Enjoy the Sounds of Dr. John at Jazz Alley

by Mary Jo on February 28th, 2007

Next week you’ll have several opportunities to enjoy some good old New Orleans blues, rock and roll, and boogie-woogie that is the signature sound of Dr. John.

I’ve already written about what a great place Jazz Alley is to listen to a performances, and Dr. John’s style seems made for this particular venue.  Ten performances in all are scheduled.  Reservations are recommended.

Dr. John (real name Mac Rebennack) began his musical career in the 1950’s, first as a guitar player, and later playing the organ and piano.  A rather troubled home situation sent him packing, and he headed west to work as a session musician.  He eventually launched his solo career with the persona Dr. John The Night Tripper.  Wearing voodoo charms and regalia, he has become known for his unique blend of voodoo mysticism and Creole roots, with funk, rhythm and blues, and psychedelic rock.

Dr. John has won four Grammy’s, received five additional nominations, and won the prestigious 2004 Academie Charles Cors 57eme Palmares award in France his tribute to his home city “N’awlinz Dis Dat of D’udda.”  He continues to tour.
