Get Stopped at the Police Museum

by Mary Jo on January 15th, 2007

Seattle Metropolitan Police Museum in Pioneer SquareBut, really officer —

You don’t need any kind of excuse to stop in at the Seattle Metropolitan Police Museum where you can discovery the history of law enforcement in the Pacific Northwest.  While most people have never heard of the museum (including life long residents), it is actually the largest police museum in the western United States.

The museum features historical displays of antique firearms, photographs, uniforms and badges, as well as some artifacts from Seattle’s early “Wild Days” of mob lynching, riots, and corruption. Customized group tours can be arranged, giving visitors the chance to see and use police equipment, and to talk with officer.  Demonstrations from the K-9 Unit, SWAT Team, and other specialty units can be arranged.  Exhibits and demonstrations are coordinated with the Seattle Police Department and the King County Sheriff’s Office.

There are a variety of activities designed specifically for children.  Young children may enjoy coloring books, or the opportunity to play dress up using a real police uniform, including gun belts (NO guns), bulletproof vests (they are heavy and hot), hats, and helmets.  Older kids may enjoy exploring a real jail cell, or dispatching a call from the police communication center.

Location:  317 Third Avenue South (Pioneer Square)

Hours:  Tuesday – Saturday, 11 am – 4 pm.

Admission:  $3 adults, $1.50 children 12 and under, 10% discount for seniors and disabled.  (This private museum is a non-profit.)

When I was growing up, I was taught that policemen (there weren’t any policewomen then — it was a long time ago) were our friends, and that we could go to one any time we might need help.  I know that times have changed, and that I am not as innocent in my beliefs as I once may have been.  This museum serves as a good reminder of the importance and dedication of men and women (and dogs, too), who have sworn to serve and protect.  It’s worth the time to stop by.
