Glass, Steel, & Photographs at The Henry Art Museum
The Henry Art Gallery is the art museum of the University of Washington. The Henry was founded in 1927, and was the first public art museum in the state of Washington. The museum went through a major expansion in the late 90’s and quadrupled in size.
Located on the west side of campus, the Henry combines glass, textured stainless steel, and cast stone with the original red brick collegiate-Gothic structure, into a home for an impressive collection of modern and contemporary art.
Exhibitions at the Henry are designed to stimulate conversations about contemporary culture, politics, and traditions of art and design. They are chosen to provoke and stimulate as well as to bring joy. It is a continuing reminder that this museum is about research and teaching as much as providing public art.
Currently on display is “The Biographical Landscape: The Photography of Stephen Shore 1968-1993.” This photographic exhibit encompasses approximately 120 color prints, many of which have never been exhibited before. Shore, known for his landscape series, American Surfaces and Uncommon Places, is considered one of the influential photographers of the late 20th century.
The Shore exhibit runs through December 31st.
Location: 4100 15th Avenue NE (41st & 15th NE).
Hours: 11am-5 pm Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday-Sunday. 11 am-8 pm on Thursday.
Admission: $10 adults, $6 seniors. Free for UW students and faculty, high school and college students, and children 13 years and under. A tour guide is available for $20/group. Thursdays are free for everyone (sponsored by The Boeing Company).
The Henry even has its own blog, “Hankblog.” While I expected an art gallery to have a more visual pleasing layout, it is still a good way to keep up on the museum’s exhibits and events.
