Happy is Good at the Puyallup Fair

by Mary Jo on September 6th, 2007

Milking Cow Although it’s officially titled the Western Washington State Fair, you’ll sound like a local if you simply refer to it as we do, as the Puyallup Fair.

With the theme “Happy is Good,” this year’s fair runs September 7th - 23rd.

You’ll find lots of animals at the fair — cows and pigs, horses and chickens, and lots of exotics.  For the 4-H’ers vying for those coveted blue ribbons, this is serious business.  The mother sow with all her piglets is a favorite with young and old, and the milking barn gives kids an opportunity to try their hand at the process.

Agricultural exhibits include the giant squash and pumpkins, display contests, and cooking and baking contest.

Playing at the Fair There’s also lots of handicraft competitions (sewing, and needlecrafts) and exhibitions.  I love watching the people who operating the spinning wheel, turning sheep’s wool into yarn.

A rodeo, concert series and a midway (with rides, play areas and carnival games) covers the rest of the grounds, and rounds out the fair events.  You can find a list of events and a daily schedule on the fair website.
