Keep Your Hands on the Wheel
When you driving in Washington State, you’d better keep your hands on the wheel and off of your cell phone or PDA.
Washington became the first state to ban text messaging while driving. Reading and sending a text message could net you a $101 ticket. The new statute takes effect January 1st, 2008.
In other hands free legislation, Washington joined 15 other states and the District of Columbia, in passing legislation that requires the use of hands free cell phone devices while driving. This statute goes takes effect January 1st, 2008.
Bottom line — when driving, keep your hands ON the wheel and OFF your cell phone!

I have no problem with that at all. I wish that was law everywhere. I don’t see how you can keep your mind on the road when your thoughts are elsewhere… but maybe that’s just me.

I, for one, am glad to see laws like this in place. I can’t count the number of times I have seen a driver do something inappropriate on the road because they were distracted by their cell phone.

It’s probably a good move by the legislature.
I can’t imagine trying to text while driving. I see a lot of what looks like texting while I’m at a stop light, but I rarely see in while moving. The impetus was probably younger (teens) drivers.
The cell phone change will prevent a challenge for me, as I’m not yet a big headset person. Although I’m blue tooth enabled, I haven’t found an earpiece that stays on my ear. I carry it with me, but it probably does’t do much good when it stays in my purse.

Great law, should be the rule in all 50 states.
But they should have added one more clause to the rule…Drivers must remove their ridiculous looking glowing blue Star Trek device from their ear before exiting their car.

Yeah, I agree. I’m just trying to find a glowing Star Trek device that I like and that fits my ear. I need the tools to get into compliance.
