Kiss Me I’m Irish!
Everyone has the opportunity to sample a little luck of the Irish during St Patrick’s Week.
Seattle and Galway, Ireland are Sister Cities, so the ties between them run deep. A variety of activities have been planned that will recreate a little piece of the homeland here in Seattle. It’s a lively experience, meant to be shared, by both the Irish and the temporarily Irish.
A variety of events are planned throughout the week, so there’s sure to be something to fit into everyone’s schedule.
Saturday, March 10th:
- Irish Soda Bread Contest held at T.S. McHugh’s (1st & Mercer). Judging starts at 2 pm. Free.
Sunday, March 11th:
- St Patrick’s Day Dash, a 4-mile rule from T.S. McHugh’s (by the Space Needle) to FX McRory’s (near Safeco Field). Race starts at 9 am.
- Matt Talbot Dinner at FX McRory’s, 6 pm. An annual fundraiser for a Belltown recovery program and treatment center, this dinner raises funds for the addicted, the homeless and mentally ill. For ticket information contact (206) 256-9865.
Friday, March 16th:
- Proclamation Lunch at FX McRory’s. At noon, Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels will join with other local and Irish dignitaries in officially proclaiming Irish Week. For more information contact (206) 361-1713.
- Laying of the Green Stripe, 7 pm. Think of this a pre-parade parade. At 7 pm, the Parade route down 4th Avenue will be marked with a green stripe. The striping will start at 4th & Jefferson, but plan to gather at FX McRory’s to ride the Truck or Trolley in this pre-parade Parade.
- Irish Cabaret at the Historic Everett Theatre, 2911 Colby Avenue (at Hewitt), Everett. An old-fashioned Irish Variety Show, with comedy, music, sing and dancing. Tickets, which include a traditional Irish dinner of corned beef & cabbage, whisky tasting, entertainment at admission to the Cabaret are $50 and available online through the theatre. Cabaret only tickets are $18-20.
Saturday, March 17th:
- St. Patrick’s Day Mass for Peace at Plymouth Congregation Church (6th & University, Downtown). All faiths are represented at this gathering for a Catholic Mass in a Protestant Church as everyone prays for Peace in Ireland. Mass begins at 10 am.
- Irish Flag Raising. Local and Irish dignitaries raised the Irish Tricolor in front of the King-County Administration Building, 500 4th Avenue (downtown). 12:20 pm.
- St. Patrick’s Day Parade begins at 12:30 pm. The parade begins at 4th & Jefferson, and heads north on 4th Avenue, passing the reviewing stand at Westlake, then continuing on to the Seattle Center for closing ceremonies at the Center House.
- Irish Week Festival, noon – 6 pm at the Center House on the Seattle Center Campus. Activities include: Irish music, singing and dancing.
- Friends of St. Patrick Banquet, 8 pm, at the College Club of Seattle (505 Madison Street). A Black-tie Optional Dinner and Dance,
Sunday, March 18th:
- Irish Week Festival continues, noon – 6 pm at the Center House on the Seattle Center Campus. Activities include: booths selling Irish and Celtic products, Irish food and beverages, Irish music, singing, dancing, and Irish Film Festival, workshops, lectures, cultural displays, children’s activities, and more.
