Look! Up in the Sky!

by Mary Jo on April 13th, 2007

solar systemAs the weather gets nicer, and the cloudy days and nights get fewer, there will be plenty up in the sky to look at.

At the University of Washington’s Theodor Jacobsen Observatory, the second-oldest structure on campus, a 110-year old refracting telescope provides visitors with a view of the heavens. The observatory is open to the public on the first and third Wednesday of every month, March through November.

Each tour includes a brief presentation, around half an hour, and if the sky is clear enough, the dome is opened for looking through the telescope. Although the tours have become popular, and therefore very crowded, the line to look through the telescope moves fairly quicly.

Location: Theodor Jacobsen Observatory, University of Washington Campus.

Dates & Times: First and Third Wednesdays, March through November. March dates, 7 - 9 pm, April through September dates, 9 - 11 pm. October & November dates, 7 - 9 pm. Closed only when conditions are so bad that travel is hazardous.

Admission: FREE, although donations are always graciously accepted. Reservations are recommended, but not required. Reserve your spot by sending an email to Dr. Ana Larson: larson@astro.washington.edu.

Parking: Available on campus for a fee, and difficult to find. Lots N1, N4, and N5 are the closest to the observatory. If parking off campus, you can walk to the observatory by heading east from NE 43rd, walking just north of the new W. H. Gates Hall.

The next tour is April 18th, 9 - 11 pm. On the agenda are presentations that include an introduction to the planets, and an exploration of the solar system. Keep your fingers crossed for a clear night and a chance to look up in the sky.

You can watch a virtual tour of the observatory online.
