Model Railroad Show at the Pacific Science Center, January 13-15th

by Mary Jo on January 10th, 2007

Model Train show at the Pacific Science CenterModel Train aficionados can head to the Seattle Center this weekend for the Model Railroad Show at the Pacific Science Center.

I remember my dad and brother staging, and re-staging, a model train in our basement.  There were tracks, and trains, and bridges, and buildings, and switches, and all sorts of convoluted layouts.  It must have been a wonderful bonding experience for the two of them, while I watched from afar.

It turns out that model railroading is even more popular today than it was those many years ago, as evidenced by this weekend’s show.  The Model Railroad Show provides information, displays, layouts, and activities for train lovers of all ages and all skill levels.  The “Loco Doctor” will be available to help diagnose problems, so if you’re looking for repair information, be sure to bring along your sick locomotive.

Special events for the younger set include the “Junior Engineer” program which give kids the opportunity to learn train safety, make scenery for staging, and get the opportunity to run trains on some exhibits.

There’s also lots of state of the art train gadgets, including a layout featuring a Digital Command Control where handheld remote controls send radio signals through a central computer which, in turn, transmits instructions to the trains via chips inside each locomotive.  Even model trains have gone high tech.

Location:  Pacific Science Center on the Seattle Center Campus.

Dates:  January 13-15th, 10 am – 6 pm.

Admission:  Included in the regular Science Center admission fee.  $10 adults; $8.50 seniors (65+); $7 children 3-13; children under 3 are free.
