Parade of Christmas Ships: December 1-23
One of the highlights of the Seattle holiday season is the Parade of Christmas Ships. I can’t remember a holiday season without the decorated ships, and sure enough, the ship-to-shore celebration has been going on for 57 years.
The 2006 festivals runs from December 1st-23rd, with the lead ship, and the numerous parade ships, all decked out with lights. The lead ship features music provided by northwest musical groups and choirs, and the music is broadcast to the people on shore. Of course, you can also expect to see a jolly old man dressed in red onboard.
Other decorated boats join in the festivities, and all together it’s the largest holiday flotilla in the world. The flotilla will visit over 45 waterfront communities during the holiday season.
There are two ways to enjoy this parade – from the ship or from the shore.
To be a part of the festivities on the water, you can make a reservation to be on one of the ships. There are a variety of special shipboard events. A portion of the ticket sales goes to benefit the Seattle Times Fund for the Needy. Information about reservations, special events, and specific availability can be found here.
From the shore, the ships are seen by thousands of people who gather communally around bon fires, or who simply find a convenient location in their neighborhood to watch the ships cruise by.
Prices: Charges to be onboard depends on the particular ship, the event, and the date, and range from approximately $22-$55 for adults, $11.50-$35 for children 5-12. A 5% discount is online discount is available.
A full schedule of sailings, community visits, and events is here. Find a time and date that’s convenient to see the decorated flotilla, and be a part of this long standing holiday tradition.
