Paramount Theater Enjoys National Tour of “Light in the Piazza”

by Mary Jo on April 12th, 2007

Light in the PiazzaSeattle is getting its share of National Broadway Tours, and this time it’s the homecoming of the romantic musical “The Light in the Piazza.” Homecoming? That’s right! The Light in the Piazza had its world premiere right here in Seattle, in 2003, at the Intiman Theatre. This return engagement is part of Broadway Across America.

Between then and now, the musical took Broadway by storm, opening on April 18th, 2005. The musical won six Tony Awards: Best Original Score, Best Actress in a Musical (Victoria Clark), Best Orchestration, Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design, and Best Lighting Design, and received five additional Tony nominations.

The musical, based on a novella by Elizabeth Spencer, is set in Florence and Rome in the summer of 1953, and tells the story of Margaret Johnson, a mother on vacation with her daughter, Clara. Clara’s meets, and falls in love, with a handsome Italian named Fabrizio. Clara opposes the romance, for reasons that are gradually revealed to the audience. Many of the song lyrics are sung in Italian and broken English, always conveying the rich romanticism of the Tuscan countryside.

Location: Paramount Theater, 911 Pine Street

Dates & Times: April 17-29th, various performance times

Tickets: $25-72, available online through Ticketmaster. Service charges apply.

The musical runs two and a half hours.
