Seattle Jewish Film Festival, March 17th - 25th
In addition to St Patrick’s Day, today also marks the opening of the annual Seattle Jewish Film Festival. It lasts for eight days, and presents films that both entertain and educate viewers.
Since its inception in 1995, SJFF has grown from a 100-seat theater to its current venue of the 800-seat Cinerama Theatre. Over the eight days of its run, more than 8,000 people will explore and celebrate Jewish history, life, and culture. Guest speakers (actors, directors, academic experts) accompany nearly every showing, so moviegoers have an opportunity to ask questions and engage in lively discussions about challenging topics and issues. Viewers will also have the opportunity to cast a ballot for the Best Feature and Best Documentary, with the Audience Choice Award bestowed on Closing Night.
There are a number of feature length true stories among this year’s offering. In the past, a number of films shown at SJFF went on to receive Oscar nominations and/or awards. (”Nowhere in Africa,” “The Last Days,” “Sophie Scholl: The Final Days.”) When I browsed through the film guide, a number of films caught by eye.
