Seattle’s Project Red Dress

by Mary Jo on January 2nd, 2008

red dress pin Every woman needs a little black dress.  The kinds of frock that, with the right accessories, can serve as appropriate attire for a variety of events.

Apparently, however, it’s even more important that we have a red dress.

Project Red Dress is a nationwide campaign to build awareness that women are at risk for heart disease, with the red dress becoming the symbol of the educational awareness that women must reduce their risks to heart disease.  No longer a man’s disease, heart disease has finally been recognized as a danger to women as well.  The red dress campaign began in 2003.

Locally, Project Red Dress will feature ten designer hopefuls who will each create one red dress.  The competition will culminate in a fashion show, featuring special guest judge Nick Verreos from Project Runway.  The design contest winner will receive an educational scholarship and a window display at the downtown Macy’s store.

You can support Project Red Dress by attending the evening fashion show which will also feature cocktails, appetizers, and a raffle.  Net proceeds benefit the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women campaign.

Location:  Macy’s Downtown, 1601 3rd Ave (map it)

Date & Time: January 25th, 2008, 5:30 pm

Tickets:  $50, $35 for students (ID required).  Available online.  Tickets include a $10 Macy’s gift card.

If you can’t make the fashion show, but are still interested in supporting this worthy cause, you can buy a red dress pin (in photo above), available online for only $2.  Quantity discounts are available (over 25), so consider buying them for all your family, friends, and co-workers.

I really don’t need a reason to slip into a red dress, but this is a good one! I love that they’ve picked such a great symbol of self confidence as a symbol of this campaign.

I’m with you, Julia! A red dress is always a perfect thing to wear!

But if I was looking for an excuse — this is a great cause!

I just bought 4 tickets to this event. Not only is this a great and worthy cause, Seattle Met Magazine always throws the best parties… (I was at their magazine launch party, it was one of the best parties I’ve ever been to in Seattle).

This will be a great event for a wonderful cause. Please not that the American Heart Association’s Red Dress Pin is free to anyone who joins the Go Red For Women movement. Please visit http://www.goredforwomen.org to get a free pin. The pin shown on this page is by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and not the AHA. For quantity orders, visit shopgored.com.

This is strange….because 6 years ago my older sister….started a project in Boston, MA called “The Red Dress Project”. I actually still have some of her stickers. Anyway her project was to help woman with breast cancer…much like these people are doing for heart disease.. and she photographed women wearing the dress and the different ways it fit them and even though they were all very different people the dress symbolized their common struggle…and showed their strength. It seems people like to rip off others ideas. Shame on all of you. What a shitty world we live in.

I’m sorry that you feel your sister has been “ripped off.”

However, we just report and talk about events here. We weren’t the organizers or creators of this event.
