See the Pacific Northwest Ballet Perform the Nutcracker

by Mary Jo on November 24th, 2006

The NutcrackerIt is the holiday season’s quintessential performance – the Pacific Northwest Ballet’s staging of the Nutcracker.

This year’s performances run November 24-December 28th, and if you haven’t gotten your tickets yet, you’d best not put it off any longer.

This holiday story of a magical storybook world has captivated audiences of all ages, with its wonderful blend of costumes, sets and choreography.

The story is a classic one:  A little girl’s dream of a fantasy world, a triumph of good over evil, and the happiness of a beautiful woman finding her Prince.  It’s the constant blurring of the lines between fantasy and reality, and a little girl on the precipice of growing up, set to a beautiful score by Tchaikovsky.  For many people, The Nutcracker is the only ballet they will ever see or be familiar with.

The company is made up of all the dancers from the ballet corps, 200 students from the Pacific Northwest Ballet School, a giant, 950 pound, Christmas tree, and a 27-foot Mouse King.  All that, and props too numerous to count.  Performances are at the Marion Oliver McCaw Hall, on the north side of the Seattle Center.

Tchaikovsky - The Nutcracker / Baryshnikov, Kirkland, CharmoliThere are 38 public performances of the ballet, and a number of school performances,  Special events include the Nutcracker March, a Nutcracker Brunch, and a wide variety of Nutcracker merchandise available.  If you can’t make the ballet this year, consider a purchase of the ballet on DVD (click on DVD cover at right).

Dates:  November 24-December 28th, with performances Thursday-Friday at 7:30 pm, Saturday at 2 & 7:30 pm, and Sunday at 1 pm.

Location:  McCaw Hall, 321 Mercer Street, Seattle.  Parking is available at the Mercer Garage, directly across the street, or a various private parking lots throughout the area.

Ticket prices:  $20-$118, depending on performance date, by phone at (206) 441-2424, at the PNB Box Office,  online, or through Ticketmaster.  Specially priced Family Packs are available.

    Hello:

I saw a performance of your Nutcracker on PBS last December. It is by far the most spectacular performance and production I have ever seen and I desperately am trying to get a DVD for my grandchildren. I have taken the oldest one who is now five years old, to the Nutcracker for three years in a row and he LOVES it. BUT, your production is the most fantastic and I would dearly love them to see it. Is there a chance that I can purchase a DVD from you? I hope sobecause I have been unable to locate a copy from anywhere to date.

    Thank you.

    Maureen
