The Seattle Traveler

Street Art at BLVD Gallery

by Mary Jo on March 6th, 2007

While Seattle lacks the urban street environment of many larger cities, BLVD Gallery (pronounced “Boulevard”) exists to make sure that we don’t entirely miss out on any street “cred” that does exist.

Created as a gallery devoted to street art and the graffiti culture, BLVD imports national and international talent to the gallery, as well as fostering the talent of local street artists.

Logan Hicks street artIf you’ve seen street artists in any of the country’s urban environments, you probably have an idea of what the genre encompasses.  Urban contemporary art is defined as “street” or “urban” art, with roots deeply embedded in the graffiti, hip hop and skateboard culture.  The genre has grown from its underground beginnings, and now embraces mainstream commercial elements as well.  Some fans call that growth selling out; others call it making a living doing something you love.  You decide.

BLVD will host works by Los Angeles stencil artist Logan Hicks in an exhibit starting later this week.  Hicks, who started his art career on the streets, now shows in galleries around the country in addition to his commercial work for Nike, Burton, and Red Bull.  Hicks’ stencil designs are marked by intricate hand cuts and layering.  His work depicting urban life has generated public and critical acclaim, and his BLVD exhibit should impress longtime fans, as well as serve as a good introduction to viewers just discovering and learning about urban art.

Location:  BLVD Gallery, 2316 Second Avenue (Belltown)

Dates & Hours:  Logan Hicks exhibit will run March 8th – April 6th, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday 1-6 pm; Friday 1-7 pm.

There is no admission charge.

For a comfortable look at gritty street life, BLVD delivers the goods.
