Tacoma’s Wintergrass Blue Grass Music Festival

by Mary Jo on February 15th, 2007

Wintergrass music festival in TacomaFor a long time, Tacoma lived in the shadow of Seattle.  It was the poor stepchild, so to speak, and was thought of as a suburb of Seattle, rather than as a city in its own right.  In fact, Tacoma is the third largest city in the state of Washington — behind Seattle and Spokane.

So it’s about time that the City of Destiny is attracting some attention of its own.

Wintergrass is one of those events that will give music lovers a taste of the city.  It’s a Bluegrass music festival, with performances spread out over a couple of hotels and a nearby church.  There are also educational workshops, impromptu jams, and a chance to see and hear some great music.

Although many of the performers are old bluegrass musicians, there will also be some Old Time bands as well as some contemporary country singers and folk singers.  Performer will include well-known bluegrass legends, as well as some local and regional up and comers.

Workshops, which are included in the price of admission, cover are variety of topics, are designed for all levels of ability:  beginner, intermediate, and advanced.  They have been designed to give attendees a look into how the professional approach their musical craft.  You’ll have a chance to hear about musical theory, practical approaches to the every day problems that musicians face, and leave with inspiration that you can incorporate into your own musical experience.  It’s a chance to broaden your knowledge base, or dig deeper into a particular topic – the choice is up to you.  Over 50 workshops will be offered.

Location:  Sheraton Tacoma Hotel & Conference Center, 1320 Broadway Plaza (Tacoma)

Date & Time:  February 22-25th, Thursday through Sunday.

Tickets:  There are a variety of ticket options available, from a one-day pass, to a full weekend ticket.  A 4-day pass is $110 for adults, $100 for seniors, $25 for kids, and $280 for a family.  A variety of other admission options are available.  Purchase online here.  There are no paper tickets.  Present ID at the festival registration desk, and receive an entry wristband.

It’s not the only reason to go to Tacoma, but it’s a darn good one!
