Plan a Halloween Outing at the Pumpkin Prowl

The family will have a spook-tacular good time at Woodland Park Zoo’s fifth annual Pumpkin Prowl.
This special fundraising event sees the Zoo-mazium becomes Boo-mazium, along with treat stations, entertainment, trick-or-treating, and lots of special goodies.  Costumes are encouraged, but no weapons, swords or other potentially dangerous item.  Be sure to bring your trick-or-treat bag, too.
Additional events include Bug World (where you can visit lots of traditional creepy crawly creatures) and the Family Farm (a big pumpkin patch with some extra surprises).

Zoo Doo is here!  Yep, the semi-annual Fecal Fest when residents vie for the chance to get a load of. . . well, crap from Woodland Park Zoo.  You’ll have a choice between the traditional Zoo Doo or the newly formulated Bedspread with a slightly higher sawdust component.  Whatever your choice, this zoo poop makes some of the richest compost around!
The smelly spread is awarded by lottery, with entries accepted from September 5th through 20th.  Randomly selected entries will then be allocated a load of doo, which can be picked up between October 4 – 19th.

The Flamingos are Back at Woodland Park Zoo

There are some new additions to the Woodland Park Zoo this spring.  Earlier this week, I wrote about Tom, the new snow leopard.  The other big zoo news is the new Chilean flamingo exhibit, a return of these delicate birds after an absence of over 10 years.
Chilean flamingos are a pale pinkish-orange in color.  They start out gray (see photo below), and then change to their pinkish color during the first two years of life.  Their color comes from their food, rich in beta carotene, and their color can change in vibrancy based on diet.

Regular readers here at The Seattle Traveler will already know that I’m a big animal lover, and the zoo is one of my favorite places to go.  A new addition to the Woodland Park Zoo provided a real “aaaaaaah” moment — the arrival of a young male snow leopard named Tom.
Snow leopard are endangered, with zoos around the world developing breeding programs to help save the species.
